Preparation Task 3
Gladiator – Maximus reveals himself to the emperor
The scene starts off with non–diegetic music in the
background along with the sound of cheers of the audience. This happens as the
emperor walks through the gates into the coliseum. The music has an eerie tone to it creating a
tense atmosphere thereby having the effect of putting the audience on edge.
The camera then cuts
to Maximus (The gladiator) where there is an eye line match of him looking at
an arrow on the ground. Then there is a close up shot of Maximus’s hand picking
up the arrow. After this there is
another close up shot of Maximus staring at the emperor. Another eye line match
is used as the camera cuts to the emperor indicating that Maximus wants to kill
the emperor with the arrow. This creates a sense of fear in the audience due to
the fact that they are made to believe that Maximus intends to kill the
emperor. You may also infer this due to the mise en scene of the character and
the intense expression on his face.
There is then another shot of Maximus picking up the arrow
from the ground. Then it cuts to another shot of a child running towards the
emperor eagerly to approach Maximus. The camera then cuts back to Maximus where
his expression changes to a face of regret. This shot reverse shot of Maximus
and the young boy induces a sense of fear in the audience due to the fact that
they fear for the child.
Another way the scene has been constructed to create affect
is when Maximus takes off his helmet and turns around to face the emperor. As
this happens the camera zooms into the gladiators face into a close up shot.
This allows the audience to clearly see his intense expression. The zoom
indicates the importance of the scene. It affects the audience by drawing them
into the scene.
